14 casting-free days for extensive renovation and maintenance work

02.09.2022

This year it was again time for the furnace relining. This is what we call the regular renovation of the heart of our iron foundry - the cupola furnace. The furnace is completely gutted from the inside and rebuilt from the bare inner furnace plate onwards. At the same time, we also completely overhauled the holding furnace and carried out comprehensive maintenance work in the foundry.

In order to ensure the necessary hardness in the material (furnace gunning material) and to be able to remedy unevenness on the furnace walls (snagging of scrap parts possible), our foundry had to complete the current orders ahead of schedule by working extra hours at short notice. Only in this way was it possible to let the furnace rest for a fortnight so that a specialist company could carry out the necessary renovation.

First, a so-called tamping compound was sprayed on the inner furnace diameter of 140 cm and provided with about 50 round anchors. A covering compound was then applied over these anchors, which ultimately represents the surface for the melting area. In the end, the furnace only has an internal diameter of 80 cm.

At the same time, our metalworking shop overhauled the filter system of the cupola furnace. All filter bags including new baskets were changed. The filter system was repainted and sealed so that all environmental requirements can continue to be met.

In parallel to the furnace renovation, our holding furnace was completely rebuilt on the inside by the company's own furnace personnel and the foundry masters.

During the shutdown period we were also able to carry out concrete work (floor renovations), crane repairs, modification work on the extraction system (for dust-free workplaces) and other maintenance work in the foundry.

Two exhausting weeks lie behind us, which went smoothly thanks to good planning and the eager commitment of the foundry and locksmith team.

The cupola furnace is a vertical cylindrical melting furnace and ideal for providing large quantities of cast iron. The raw material is fed into the upper section of the unit together with coke (fuel), melted at a temperature of up to 1,500 degrees Celsius and finally flows out of the furnace as cast iron in the lower section.

The molten iron runs into the holding holding furnace and is collected and kept warm until it can be tapped. Our holding furnace is directly attached to the melting furnace.
